Which States Have The Most Teams For Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament?

The 68 teams in the 2025 Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament come from all over the country. There are 34 states represented by at least one team in the field.

But no state is better represented than Virginia.

Of course, the caveat about Virginia sports betting is that it is not legal to bet on in-state college teams while you’re physically located in the state. Still, BetVirginia.com wanted to see which states have the most teams in this year’s women’s tourney.

Virginia Teams In The Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament

The 68 teams in the women’s field include eight teams that start before anyone else, with “First Four” games on Wednesday and Thursday. The winners of those four games go on to the first round, where the field is whittled to the traditional 64-team bracket that millions of Americans love to fill out for March Madness. Operators offering Virginia sports betting promos will have lines on these games and Virginians can bet on all of them – except the ones in which Virginia colleges are playing.

Let’s break down Virginia’s five NCAA Tournament teams, starting with one of the squads playing in the First Four.

  • William & Mary: The Coastal Athletic Association tournament champion, William & Mary (15-18 overall) is the only team in the field with a losing record. The program’s first NCAA Tournament bid was secured with a 66-63 win over Campbell in the CAA title game. William & Mary faces fellow No. 16 seed High Point in the First Four on Thursday (9 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2). In states where betting on Virginia teams is legal, BetMGM Sportsbook has the Tribe as a 6.5-point underdog.
  • George Mason: The Patriots (27-5) punched their first NCAA Tournament ticket in program history by winning the Atlantic 10 title, beating St. Joseph’s 73-58 on March 9. The No. 11 seed in the Spokane 1 Region, George Mason faces sixth-seeded Florida State on Saturday (7:45 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2) in a first-round game at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis has guided a steady turnaround for the program since going 10-19 in 2021-22, her first season in charge.
  • Richmond: The Spiders (27-6) earned an at-large bid out of the CAA after leading the conference at 17-1 in the regular season. A loss to St. Joseph’s in the semifinals of the league tourney ended their 17-game winning streak but the program still earned a No. 8 NCAA Tournament seed, the highest for a Virginia team. Caesars Sportsbook has Richmond at +25000 odds to win Spokane Region 1; the Spiders face No. 9 seed Georgia Tech on Friday (7:30, ESPN) at Los Angeles in the first round.
  • Norfolk State: The Spartans (30-4) were one of only nine 30-win women’s teams in the nation and ran through the MEAC undefeated – 14-0 in the regular season and 3-0 in the league tournament. Senior guard Diamond Johnson was fifth in the country in steals, averaging 3.6 per game. Norfolk State is the No. 13 seed in the Birmingham 2 Region, a strong seed for a MEAC program, and faces No. 4 seed Maryland in a road game at College Park on Saturday (4 p.m., ESPN).
  • Liberty: Liberty visits No. 4 seed and first-round host Kentucky, with bet365 Sportsbook listing the Flames as a 17-point underdog for the game on Friday (noon, ESPN) in Lexington. The Flames (26-6) earned their 18th NCAA Tournament bid, but first since 2018, by winning the Conference USA tournament in their second year in the league. They enter the NCAAs on an 11-game winning streak, including three league tournament games.

Though you can’t bet on in-state teams in Virginia, the women’s and men’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments still offer a dizzying array of wagering opportunities. This is the biggest event of the year for sportsbook operators over the next three weeks.
