Who Will Portray Tim Walz? SNL Political Odds

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

The Democratic Party made waves earlier this week, selecting popular Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as the vice presidential running mate for presidential candidate Kamala Harris in her quest to become the first female president in American history.

Walz, a former high school teacher and football coach, has served as the governor in the Land of 10,000 Lakes since 2019, months after he defeated Republican challenger Jeff Johnson, carrying 53.8% of the state’s votes.

Walz has already helped shorten the Kamala Harris presidential odds in the days since his appointment, but with another intense few months to go in the political race, it's time to lighten the mood just a bit.

With Harris announcing Walz as her official running mate, and Maya Rudolph confirming her comeback to Saturday Night Live to play Harris, the world is wondering: Who will play Walz?

At BetVirginia.com, we developed exclusive odds to see who will be portraying the VP candidate this upcoming season. While many fans had Steve Martin as their obvious top-pick, the veteran comedian has already turned down the opportunity. SNL could surprise everyone with another high-profile choice, such as Danny DeVito, or an actual current cast member, like James Austin Johnson. SNL returns on Sept. 28.

Who Will Play Tim Walz on SNL?

The shoo-in favorite to play Walz on SNL was Steve Martin, who sports a similar older white male vibe to the second-term Democratic governor from the land of Paul Bunyan, which is why we were going to list him at -150 to do just that in 2024. But Martin has taken himself out of the running, leaving the door open for...

1.  Jim Gaffigan +500: The 58-year-old comedian has been around forever, and has often said watching Saturday Night Live as a teenager helped inspire him to pursue comedy. Gaffigan most recently appeared in Jerry Seinfeld's "Unfrosted" and "Peter Pan and Wendy." While we see the fit with dad jokes and his Mid-Western ties, could Gaffigan match the energy of Coach Walz? We shall see.

2. Danny DeVito +550: What a flex this would be. America loves them some DeVito, going all the way back to "Taxi" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoos' Nest." Can SNL's Lorne Michaels lure him away from Jersey Mike's for a few appearances this fall?

3. Andy Richter +650: The longtime sidekick to Conan O'Brien is always up for a good time. Imagine he and Maya Rudolph together for a comedy clinic each Saturday night. Richter most recently appeared in "80 For Brady."

4. Bobby Moynihan +750: Moynihan tore it up on SNL from 2008-2017, impersonating everyone from Bill Belichick to Chris Christie. He could easily return to take on Walz.

5. James Austin Johnson +800. The only current SNL member on our board should Michaels want to go in-house after Martin turned it down.

6. Al Franken +1100: Never say never?

7. Mike Myers +2150: An SNL legend, who wouldn't love to see Myers return? After a few monster hits with the "Wayne's World" and "Austin Powers" films, it's been a quiet 15 years from Myers outside of the "Shrek" voice work. Let's all forgive him for "The Cat in the Hat." It's time.

Other candidates not mentioned above include comedians like Nick Offerman, who has appeared on the show in the past and has the right mixture of charisma and comedic timing to play the governor of Minnesota on Saturday Night Live. And as long as we can dream, maybe Will Ferrell is game to come back and ham it up?
