As the weather starts to turn to Spring, breweries begin to open up their patios as troths of people flock to enjoy a beverage in the crisp Virginia air. Whether it's a guided tour, dedicated craft beer crawl or just enjoying a refreshing pint after a brisk hike, Virginia is a perfect brew destination for those traveling through the area.
Virginia is truly for beer lovers. And while Virginia continually pumps out huge volume of beer, where does it land in the best states for beer lovers?
With National Beer Day arriving on April 7, BetVirginia.com decided to take a break from Virginia sports betting and look at the best states to celebrate in if you are a big fan of beer. When it comes to determining the best, we looked quality, quantity and affordability.
BetVirginia.com utilized 3 combined data points to develop the ranking of the 50 U.S. states from
best to worst for beer lovers.
We utilized BeerAdvocate.com to get the average rating of beers brewed in the state (ratings given out of 5), BrewersAssociation.org to get the number of breweries per capita (per 100,000 residents) and MakeBeerEasy.com for the average price of a 24-pack per state. Once acquiring that information, we averaged out the ranking of the states to get our final rankings. Before you take a look, remember that BetVirginia is home to the best VA sports betting promo codes.
Virginia significantly shot up the rankings after the affordability data came in as 10th in the category. According to MakeBeerEasy.com, the average price of a 24-pack of beer is only $16.85. That price is significantly low compared to the rest of the states; however, neighbor North Carolina comes in a tad lower at $16.08.
The low prices of cases have translated to big time revenue for the state. Just in the month of December, ABC Virginia reported that the state sold over $20 million in beer case sales.
Quantity of places to grab a craft beer was high in Virginia as well, mainly due to the massive growth seen in the Richmond area. The Richmond region is home to over 30 different breweries and home to some popular brands like Stone Brewing & Veil Brewing. In fact, Vinepair recently named Richmond as the #1 craft beer destination in the entire world.
According to BrewersAssociation.org, Virginia is home to 314 craft breweries – which continues to grow year-by-year. The Old Dominion ranked 17th in breweries per capita at 4.9 breweries per 100,000 21+ adults in the state. To add onto that huge number of breweries, the state also produces 2 gallons of beer per 21+ adult a year.
Despite differing opinions on the great offerings in the state, Virginia found itself down in the 25th spot for their quality ranking. According to BeerAdvocate.com, Virginia has the 25th highest average rating of beers brewed in the state. So while Virginia has hundreds of breweries, they have been putting out somewhat average quality – at least according to those who have taken the time to rate their beers.
