Which NFL Teams Are The Most Supportive of Black History Month?

The Washington Commanders had a dream season in 2024, emerging from the depths of a 4-13 record the year before to go 12-5 and reach the NFC Championship Game. The organization is gaining notice for advocacy off the field as well.

Black History Month kicks off in February. To honor the month, BetVirginia.com was curious about which NFL teams have been the most supportive and inclusive toward the holiday and the Black community in America. We created a scoring system factoring in content all teams have shared on social media platforms regarding holidays such as Black History Month, MLK Jr. Day, Juneteenth and more. We also factored in how outspoken and supportive each team has been in support of the Black community in the United States. BetVirginia.com offers these rankings plus Virginia sports betting coverage.

Where Commanders Rank In Honoring Black History

Washington came in seventh on our list of NFL teams that most actively and publicly support Black History Month, with 85 points in our scoring system. The Minnesota Vikings were first at 165 points, followed by the Los Angeles Rams (155).

In 2024, we assembled a list of 10 Most LGBTQIA+ inclusive NFL teams and the Commanders ranked well there too, finishing second in our tabulations using several data points (again including inclusive social media posts).

Social media posts are a quick, comprehensive way for any sports franchise to connect with its fanbase. The Commanders marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20 with a photo of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial – in the nation’s capital, within walking distance of the Lincoln Memorial – and one of his famous quotes.

And the Washington franchise is responsible for one of the most memorable milestones for African-American athletes in recent decades. In the 1987 season, Doug Williams became the first Black quarterback to lead his team to a Super Bowl title, earning Super Bowl MVP honors by passing for passing for 340 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-10 rout of the Denver Broncos.

Williams has been a member of Washington’s front office in various roles since 2014 and is currently the Senior Advisor to Team President Jason Wright.
