It has been half a decade since the Washington Nationals last reached the sportâs biggest stage, when they took down the mighty Houston Astros in seven games to clinch the clubâs lone World Series title in 2019.
Since then, things have been bleak in the nationâs capital, with four cellar finishes in the last five years offset by a fourth-place finish in the National League East in 2024. Last year, Washington went 71-91 (.438) for the second straight season, which does not give much hope for Washington Nationals odds in 2025.
BetVirginia.com used Fangraphs.com to gather the 2025 salary information and projected 2025 WAR. We then divided the salary by the playerâs projected WAR to determine the playersâ potential value, as in dollars per projected WAR point.
Player | 2025 Salary | 2025 Projected WAR | Value (Salary Per WAR) * |
James Wood (Outfielder) | $800,000 | 3.1 | $258,065 |
CJ Abrams (Shortstop) | $800,000 | 2.9 | $275,862 |
Jacob Young (Outfielder) | $800,000 | 1.8 | $444,444 |
*Rounded to nearest whole number
Note: Some playersâ salaries are represented by their salary before arbitration. We only included players projected on the Opening Day 40-man roster.

The immediate future doesnât look promising in D.C., with oddsmakers from DraftKings VA Sportsbook giving the Nats a preseason win total over/under of 72.5. But thatâs not to say that there arenât players that are expected to deliver in 2025.
Two of the teamâs recently acquired young stars, James Wood and CJ Abrams, are expected to have big seasons for Washington. Wood has a preseason WAR (Wins Above Replacement) projection of 3.1 at Fangraphs.com; Abrams carries a 2.9 WAR projection.
Throw in outfielder Jacob Young and his 1.8 WAR projection from Fangraphs and you have the three Nationals players that are expected to provide the most bang for their collective bucks in 2025. All three will earn the league minimum of $800,000 this year, and could be players to watch for Virginia sports betting prop wagers.
Of the three, Wood and Abrams (who were acquired from San Diego in the 2022 Juan Soto trade) are expected to provide the lionâs share of Washingtonâs power in 2025, with home run projections of 21 and 19, respectively. Youngâs contact-first nature means he carries a projection of five home runs in 139 games, per Fangraphs.com.
Regardless of how the trio of Abrams, Wood and Young perform on the diamond in 2025, all three are expected to provide the most value for the Nats in the year ahead, thanks to their rock-bottom salaries and elevated WAR projections. They could supply the kind of offensive production that sparks a baseball renaissance in the capital region and for the teamâs backers at Virginia sports betting apps.
