With Halloween in the rear-view mirror and Christmas still more than a month away, it’s time to turn our collective attention forward to a fall holiday that’s centered squarely upon a feast of food.
Thanksgiving is less than a month away, with this year’s iteration of the time-honored holiday taking place on Nov. 28, with Washington Commanders playoff chances sure to be a hot topic at the Thanksgiving table this year.
That also brings our attention to which side dishes Virginians prefer to eat when the turkey comes out in November. Utilizing Google Trends, BetVirginia.com analyzed the most popular Thanksgiving side dishes of Virginia residents. We sought search results of side dished in data from searches conducted from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 2023. The dishes we analyzed were those most often named in total searches in the United States, including mashed potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, candied yams, brussels sprouts and cranberry sauce.

While the bird itself gets most of the attention each Thanksgiving, foodies will tell you that it’s a proper assortment of quality side dishes that sets the holiday apart. Traditional items such as stuffing, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes all are among the favorites in the state that offers Virginia sports betting.
When it came to which side dishes were the Old Dominion’s favorite, Virginia residents couldn’t pick just one. Both stuffing and macaroni and cheese tied for first overall with a search interest score of 16 during the time we researched search results. Mashed potatoes finished with a search interest score of 12 to place third overall in the Commonwealth.
Rounding out the list of Virginia’s favorite Thanksgiving side dishes for 2024 were green bean casserole, which notched a search interest score of 11, and sweet potato casserole (nine), which rounded out the quintet of Thanksgiving side dishes drawing the most interest.
