Virginia Locals Among Most Likely To Be Proposed To This Engagement Season

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Every holiday season, people hit the stores to try to find the right gift for their significant other. In more than a few cases, that gift will be an engagement ring for the one they love.

Experts estimate that 40% of all marriage proposals happen between November and Valentineā€™s Day. At BetVirginia.com, we took a break from Virginia sports betting coverage because we wanted to see which states are most likely to have proposals take place during this engagement season.

Using Google Trends, we combined the search interest scores for ā€œengagement ringā€ and ā€œproposal ideas.ā€ The search period was 30 days, ending Nov. 20, 2024. We ranked the top 15 states for popping the question, based on combined search interest scores.

While they say Virginia is for lovers, it seems there are a few states where people are more inclined to pop the question at this time of the year.

Engagement Season Questions

So, if youā€™re looking to pop the question this season, here are some things you might want to consider before getting the ring.

According to FaithfulPlatform.com, the average cost of an engagement ring this year is $5,500. However, the price of a two-carat ring can vary significantly, depending on the clarity, color and other factors. A lab-grown two-carat diamond could start at around $2,000, while a high-grade natural diamond can run up to $70,000.

Maybe you have the ring, but you donā€™t know how to ask the question. BrilliantEarth.com offers several ideas for a holiday-themed proposal, including getting your fiancĆ©-to-be to help you set up the Christmas tree. Put the ring in an ornament and let your special someone find it as they help decorate the trees. Or let them discover it in their stocking on Christmas morning.

Since the holiday season can be somewhat unpredictable weatherwise, you might want to be careful about planning an ornate outdoor proposal. A little snow could add romance to the special occasion, but heavy winds and sleet probably wonā€™t.
