Top Christmas Song Keeps Returning To Charts

First off, weā€™ll assume Virginians were searching for Mariah Careyā€™s ā€œAll I Want For Christmas Is Youā€ ā€“ but there is a different song with the same title released a few years earlier by Vince Vance and the Valiants, which happens to be heavy in my rotation of Christmas songs. Itā€™s worth a listen if you havenā€™t heard of it, but I digress.

Getting back to Mariah Carey, her song has dominated the holidays since it first came out 30 years ago. Itā€™s still No. 1 on the Billboard Holiday 100 this week and has maintained that position for 63 of the 71 weeks the chart has been published over the years.

Virginians Love 1950s Christmas Songs

Right behind Mariah on the Holiday 100 is the song thatā€™s also No. 2 for Virginians. Brenda Lee first sang ā€œRockinā€™ Around The Christmas Treeā€ back in 1958, and it has remained popular ever since. In fact, last year the song reached the top of the charts for the Billboard Hot 100, which includes all pop songs for its rankings. Lee, who turned 80 earlier this month, became the oldest artist in Billboardā€™s history to have the No. 1 pop hit.

Another song from the 1950s is also No. 3 for Virginians and the Billboard Holiday 100. ā€œJingle Bell Rock,ā€ first performed by Bobby Helms, can be considered a rock nā€™ roll or a country song, depending on the artist. Helmsā€™ version is the one that ranks third on the chart, but thereā€™s also cover version by Daryl Hall and John Oates from 1983 that comes in at No. 76 this week.
