While Virginia Tech closed the year with a rivalry win over Virginia and a bowl win over Tulane to complete a winning season, Vanderbilt is coming off a 2-10 campaign in which it went winless in SEC play. Vanderbilt was as successful against the spread last season (2-10) as it was on the field. After a rough start against the spread last season, Virginia Tech finished 8-5 against the spread, covering in seven of its final nine games.

What the Spread Tells Us

The spread suggests that things aren't expected to get much better for Vanderbilt as Clark Lea begins his fourth season as head coach. While we haven't seen either team play, a 13.5-point spread suggests that oddsmakers really like Virginia Tech's chances. After losing their first four road games last season, the Hokies blew out Boston College and Virginia in their final two road contests -- by a combined 64 points. The Commodores haven't beat a Power 4 team since knocking off Florida in their home finale in November 2022.

What the Moneyline Tells Us

For bettors feeling confident in Vanderbilt, this is one to place money on. Listed at +425, a $10 bet on the Commodores would pay $42.50 if they were to pull off the upset. A 31-24 upset of Florida on Nov. 19, 2022 serves as the last upset pulled by Vanderbilt. The Hokies last lost as a favorite on Nov. 18 last season at home to NC State. Their last loss as a road favorite came in the 2022 opener at Old Dominion.

Hokies Chances to Win vs. Vanderbilt in Week 1

As the first game of the season, the Aug. 31 contest is vitally important for both teams. Virginia Tech is coming off a 7-6 as it looks to make a big jump under third-year coach Brent Pry. For that to happen, the opener in Nashville is a game the Hokies simply can't afford to lose. The Commodores play a brutal SEC slate, which includes games against Alabama, Missouri, LSU, Tennessee and Texas. If they have any hopes of sniffing bowl eligibility, this is probably one that Vanderbilt has to have.

How the Hokies Win vs. Vanderbilt

For Virginia Tech to leave Nashville with a victory, it will need to run the ball. The Hokies had a top 25 rushing offense nationally last season. Bhayshul Tuten and quarterback Kyron Drones were a lethal combination, totaling nearly 1,700 yards rushing. Fortunately for the Hokies, Vanderbilt averaged just 3.3 yards per rush last season. Virginia Tech ranked second in the ACC in sacks in 2023. Getting the Commodores into obvious passing situations would go a long way in aiding Virginia Tech's cause.

How the Commodores Win vs. Virginia Tech

Vanderbilt didn't do a whole lot of winning last season, but in its two victories, it combined for 82 points and limited itself to just one turnover in those games. The Commodores also ranked last in the SEC in total offense last season. Virginia Tech gave up nearly 32 points per game in its losses last season. For the Commodores to have a chance, they will have to find a way to generate some offense.

Hokies Record vs. Vanderbilt

With just nine prior meetings, it's hard to call this one a rivalry, but the schools did meet in five straight seasons from 1982 to 1986. After a two-year hiatus, the teams last met in 1989.

Vanderbilt took three of the first four meetings, which included two by shutout. The first meeting was a 40-0 victory for the Commodores in 1930. It would be 35 years later before the teams met again.

The current streak is a five-game winning streak for the Hokies, with wins coming from 1983 to 1986 and then again in 1989. Virginia Tech blanked Vanderbilt 18-0 in the last meeting between the schools — played in Blacksburg. The season opener will be the earliest meeting ever between the schools.

The last Vanderbilt win in the series is also the most lopsided contest in series history. The victory gave Vandy its first winning season in seven years.

The closest contest ever played between the schools came in Bill Dooley's final regular season win as head coach of the Hokies. Chris Kinzer kicked five field goals in the win. Maurice Williams finished with 85 yards rushing to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Nov. 4, 1989: Vanderbilt 0, Virginia Tech 18

Legendary head coach Frank Beamer's first shutout win came over Vanderbilt in the last meeting between the schools. The Hokies managed just 239 yards, but Mickey Thomas set a school record with six made field goals. The victory ensured the first non-losing season for Beamer — his third as head coach.
